** Hearts of Darkness The Making of The Final Friday: Here's an update on the project from Michael Felsher; Right now, through my own label Red Shirt Home Video, and Synapse Films my distribution and production partner, we are in the process of pressing the two discs that will be featured in the Blu-ray set. There will be a beautiful O-Card featured on this 2-Disc Edition which highlights Marc Schoenbach's killer artwork for the film that is being proofed right now and should go to print sometime during the week after Thanksgiving. The Blu-ray case slipsleeve will be double sided featuring the aforementioned Schoenbach art as well as a reverse cover featuring the "Chrome Skull" art that was used for so long during the fundraising campaign. That is also going to print after Turkey Day.
Also included in this edition will be six double-sided postcards with all-new illustrations and essays from Adam Marcus that are exclusive to this edition. Those are being printed within the next two weeks and then we are off to the races. Right now a lot of the pressing plants, and printers used by us and many of our fellow physical media companies are overwhelmed by Black Friday releases and a slew of titles intended for the holiday season. We have a good place in line, but there is a line. Unless there are some hideous unexpected issues, you will have your copy in time for Christmas. And you will have it before anyone else. The wide release of this set won't happen until sometime after January at the earliest.
** THE AUTOPSY OF ALBERT KEMPER: Alexandra Shipp is set to topline THE AUTOPSY OF ALBERT KEMPER, a psychological horror film from writer-director David Benullo that has kicked off production in Minnesota. Golden Globe nominee Eric Stoltz and David Howard Thornton, who plays Art the Clown in the TERRIFIER films, will also star.
In THE AUTOPSY OF ALBERT KEMPER, Shipp plays Riley Shaw, a morgue assistant who faces a terrifying night when the body of a notorious serial killer begins to show signs of something beyond death. No word on Stoltz's role, but Thornton will play the film's titular villain, Albert Kemper.
The film draws inspiration from an urban legend surrounding the aftermath of Jeffrey Dahmer's death — rumors that authorities handcuffed the serial killer's body to the gurney for fear he might "rise again." Producers include Epic Level Entertainment's Dana Guerin, John Frank Rosenblum and Tracy Mercer, Mandy June Turpin, and Jim Strader. (thanks to Deadline.com)

** Scarlett Johansson joins THE EXORCIST: Scarlett Johansson has been announced as the lead for Mike Flanagan's new take on THE EXORCIST franchise at Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. Flanagan, the creator of acclaimed Netflix series like THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and MIDNIGHT MASS, wrote the script and is directing and producing the new feature.
Universal spent $400 million in 2021 to land a new trilogy from 2018's HALLOWEEN director David Gordon Green. The first film crashed and burned, THE EXORCIST BELIEVER debuting in 2023 to bad reviews and just $137 million at the box office. Ditching that plan, the studio opted to give carte blanche creative control of the property to Flanagan – allowing him to deliver a new take of whatever he wants to do. The result is a project said to be set in the 'Exorcist universe' but isn't a reboot, remake or sequel.
Previously, Flanagan says the plan is to do something that has "never been done within the franchise – something that honours what came before it but isn't built on nostalgia". He also aims to make the scariest movie he's ever made. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)
** RESIDENT EVIL: Speaking on Deadline's Crew Call podcast from Prague, where he's in the midst of production, filmmaker Zach Cregger reveals that the new film will employ a more straightforward approach than his last two:
"The movie I'm in Prague right now working on has no big twists. It's not a narrative balancing act. There's no… it is a pretty straightforward thing. It follows one character from point A to point B. That's it. And it's kind of refreshing, you know. I get to kind of just reset and just like play."
That said, don't expect an entirely traditional film approach. Cregger says a big reason he's doing this, aside from his love for the games, is that he's attempting to translate a game-style structure into a feature film:
"I've played the games religiously. I am intimately familiar with 'Resident Evil' as a game franchise. And I find it to be inherently cinematic. There's something about the structure of those games and the pacing of those games that is so thrilling to me.
I've never seen a movie that really leans in to what those games offer. I love the slow creeping dread that these games naturally kind of exist in. The idea of being able to make a narrative film with the video game structure… I can't believe it hasn't happened yet. It feels like this movie should have been made a really long time ago, so I'm kind of excited that I get to do it." (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

"I'm hoping that we'll do a ZOMBIELAND 3 in 2029. ** Brady Corbet's upcoming horror film: Following the success of THE BRUTALIST last year, filmmaker Brady Corbet confirmed that his next film would be a 1970s horror-western project with a 'looser style' than his prior movies, such as VOX LUX and THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER. Corbet indicated that he had watched Tobe Hooper's original THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and felt inspired to write the new film. It is one involving a story spanning 150 years, although it is primarily set in the 1970s.
Now, in an interview with Sleek, he indicates the film looks likely to have a runtime akin to the bladder-busting 215-minute runtime of THE BRUTALIST: "To make a film yours, you have to be absolutely uncompromising about certain pillars of the project. You'll walk away if those pillars aren't erected and maintained. For example, the length of THE BRUTALIST – and also for my next project – time is a crucial ingredient. These are melodramas, and if you compress them into two hours to satisfy a studio, the experience becomes implausible." (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)
