** BARBARIAN: Producer Roy Lee has indicated that WEAPONS director Zach Cregger's acclaimed 2022 feature BARBARIAN is finally getting a physical media release. Despite being a solid little hit at the box office, earning $45 million off a $4 million budget, the 20th Century Studios title never had a disc release. Disney has, outside of its biggest family and Marvel hits, generally avoided physical media releases in recent years.

Now, producer Roy Lee has reportedly revealed on a podcast (via The HD Room) that "they [the studio] told us they were doing Criterion, I don't know what's happening." It marks the first evidence of a potential physical media release for the film, though Criterion has yet to confirm it. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

Pic is produced by HasBeen Productions, New American Picture Show, and Intrinsic Value Films.

"This film was designed to be felt as much as seen," says Pizarro. "By embracing a saturated, giallo-influenced palette and a visceral, hands-on visual language, ILLOMEN pushes classical genre into a raw, maximalist space between beauty and annihilation." (thanks to Deadline.com)

** SOULM8TE: Blumhouse and Universal Pictures' M3GAN spin-off film SOULM8TE, originally slated for early next year, has been delayed indefinitely. Originally announced in mid-2024, the film was directed and co-written by Kate Dolan and was going to arrive on January 9th 2026.

That was still the case this week, even though no marketing material for the film had been released. It was widely expected that a delay was coming, and now it has, with the title pulled from Universal's release date calendar. It goes beyond that, however, with reports that the film is currently being shopped around to other studios – the studio essentially dumping the movie. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** THE CONJURING: More to come? Franchise producer Peter Safran tells EW that the massive box-office success of THE CONJURING LAST RITES – which made $494 million from a $55 million budget – has made the team seemingly reconsider as they think audiences remain invested in the series:

"I think that LAST RITES shows that there is a lot of fuel left in the tank. It was the end of that particular version of the story with Patrick and Vera and that version of THE CONJURING. There's so much more to it that we haven't dug into.

I think there's really exciting ways to go with both film and television, frankly. It would be incredibly satisfying. People have been on this journey with us for a dozen years now. I think they want more. The introduction, in a real way, of Judy and Tony, I think, people love. The feedback we got was they love those characters. So I think that there'll be more to come." (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** TORSO: An adaptation of the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko that has been winding its way around Hollywood for over two decades is alive once again. Netflix has picked up the movie rights to the work and is in early development on a feature adaptation of the true-crime story revolving around Elliot Ness. The deal comes after a brief but intense bidding war and is said to be in the seven figures for the rights.

No writer or director are attached yet, but the producing team is stacked. Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee has partnered once again with his Weapons filmmaker Zach Cregger, who will produce (but not direct) via his Subconscious production banner. Alex Hedlund and Nick Antosca will produce via their shingle, Eat the Cat, known for prestige, true-life fare such as Candy and A Friend of the Family. Bendis and Andreyko will exec produce.

The graphic novel, initially published by Image Comics as a six-issue limited series, told the true story of Ness' time after his famous Al Capone escapades. After he moved to Cleveland, he and got embroiled in the hunt for a serial killer who was leaving torsos in the river and taunting notes to police. Bendis and Andreyko wrote the story, with Bendis doing the art. (thanks to HollywoodReporter.com)

** Uwe Boll's ALONE IN THE DARK reboot: Director Uwe Boll is rebooting the horror action franchise ALONE IN THE DARK. Boll's Event Films has optioned the film rights to the hit survival horror video game series from publisher THQ Nordic. The H.P. Lovecraft-inspired franchise, which follows private detective Edward Carnby in his fight against the undead, has spawned seven games and sold millions of units worldwide.

Boll adapted ALONE IN THE DARK as a feature film in 2005, starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid. While widely panned by critics then and now, the film has since achieved a sort of cult status. For the reboot, Boll said he plans to stay closer to the original game, following the story of the latest 2024 release.

"We will capture the spirit and the era of the original games and follow the story of the new game," said Boll, noting, "we can't wait to reboot the franchise and cast our new Edward Carnby." Boll's production partner Michael Roesch said they were also looking to develop the franchise into a TV series. (thanks to HollywoodReporter.com)

However, production on a third film was held off, waiting to see how the first film performed. Wan says in a statement: "I've been a huge admirer of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I'm looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise."

Blum says in a statement: "Diving in with James for this exciting rebirth of the franchise that started it all for Blumhouse is exactly what we dreamed of when we merged with Atomic Monster. I'll be actively involved with him to introduce this new chapter, Thankfully, we're able to spend a little more than the $15,000 we had on the first movie, but one thing will remain the same — do not see it alone."

** PORTRAIT OF GOD: In a competitive situation, Universal Pictures has acquired PORTRAIT OF GOD, a spec from emerging filmmaker Dylan Clark that expands on the world of his viral horror short of the same name. Written by Clark and Joe Russo, the film will mark the first collaboration of producers Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele, two of the biggest names in horror, who have never before worked together.

While the plot of the feature take is being kept under wraps, the short centers on a religious young woman who discovers the disquieting answer to the question, "What does God look like?" Opening with a quote from the Old Testament — "No man shall see Me and live" — it finds Mia sitting in the dark, practicing a slide presentation about a work of art dubbed "Portrait of God." To some who view the painting, she says, it appears completely black. But others report seeing a person in the darkness — one who's been described time and again, in consistent detail. Minimalistic yet menacing, the short offers a counterpoint to the idea of God as a benevolent entity. Viewers of the portrait, beware.

PORTRAIT OF GOD has accrued over 8.6 million views on YouTube since premiering in August 2022. Peele and Win Rosenfeld will produce the feature adaptation through Monkeypaw Productions' first-look deal with the studio, alongside Raimi and Romel Adam through Ghost House Pictures and Russo. Chris Rosati, who brought the project to Monkeypaw, will executive produce, with Sam Evenson co-producing. Jose Canas will oversee the project for Ghost House, with Kate Oh overseeing for Monkeypaw and Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott overseeing for Universal. ** Hearts of Darkness The Making of The Final Friday: Here's an update on the project from Michael Felsher; Right now, through my own label Red Shirt Home Video, and Synapse Films my distribution and production partner, we are in the process of pressing the two discs that will be featured in the Blu-ray set. ** THE AUTOPSY OF ALBERT KEMPER: Alexandra Shipp is set to topline THE AUTOPSY OF ALBERT KEMPER, a psychological horror film from writer-director David Benullo that has kicked off production in Minnesota. In THE AUTOPSY OF ALBERT KEMPER, Shipp plays Riley Shaw, a morgue assistant who faces a terrifying night when the body of a notorious serial killer begins to show signs of something beyond death. No word on Stoltz's role, but Thornton will play the film's titular villain, Albert Kemper.

The film draws inspiration from an urban legend surrounding the aftermath of Jeffrey Dahmer's death — rumors that authorities handcuffed the serial killer's body to the gurney for fear he might "rise again." Producers include Epic Level Entertainment's Dana Guerin, John Frank Rosenblum and Tracy Mercer, Mandy June Turpin, and Jim Strader. (thanks to Deadline.com)

** Scarlett Johansson joins THE EXORCIST: Scarlett Johansson has been announced as the lead for Mike Flanagan's new take on THE EXORCIST franchise at Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. Flanagan, the creator of acclaimed Netflix series like THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and MIDNIGHT MASS, wrote the script and is directing and producing the new feature.

Universal spent $400 million in 2021 to land a new trilogy from 2018's HALLOWEEN director David Gordon Green. The first film crashed and burned, THE EXORCIST BELIEVER debuting in 2023 to bad reviews and just $137 million at the box office. Ditching that plan, the studio opted to give carte blanche creative control of the property to Flanagan – allowing him to deliver a new take of whatever he wants to do. The result is a project said to be set in the 'Exorcist universe' but isn't a reboot, remake or sequel.

Previously, Flanagan says the plan is to do something that has "never been done within the franchise – something that honours what came before it but isn't built on nostalgia". He also aims to make the scariest movie he's ever made. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** RESIDENT EVIL: Speaking on Deadline's Crew Call podcast from Prague, where he's in the midst of production, filmmaker Zach Cregger reveals that the new film will employ a more straightforward approach than his last two:

"The movie I'm in Prague right now working on has no big twists. It's not a narrative balancing act. There's no… it is a pretty straightforward thing. It follows one character from point A to point B. That's it. And it's kind of refreshing, you know. I get to kind of just reset and just like play."

That said, don't expect an entirely traditional film approach. Cregger says a big reason he's doing this, aside from his love for the games, is that he's attempting to translate a game-style structure into a feature film:

"I've played the games religiously. I am intimately familiar with 'Resident Evil' as a game franchise. And I find it to be inherently cinematic. There's something about the structure of those games and the pacing of those games that is so thrilling to me.

I've never seen a movie that really leans in to what those games offer. I love the slow creeping dread that these games naturally kind of exist in. The idea of being able to make a narrative film with the video game structure… I can't believe it hasn't happened yet. It feels like this movie should have been made a really long time ago, so I'm kind of excited that I get to do it." (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

** MEAT KILLS: The bloodiest Dutch horror film ever! What begins as an idealistic mission ends in a nightmare. Corbet indicated that he had watched Tobe Hooper's original THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE and felt inspired to write the new film. It is one involving a story spanning 150 years, although it is primarily set in the 1970s.

Now, in an interview with Sleek, he indicates the film looks likely to have a runtime akin to the bladder-busting 215-minute runtime of THE BRUTALIST: "To make a film yours, you have to be absolutely uncompromising about certain pillars of the project. You'll walk away if those pillars aren't erected and maintained. For example, the length of THE BRUTALIST – and also for my next project – time is a crucial ingredient. These are melodramas, and if you compress them into two hours to satisfy a studio, the experience becomes implausible." (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)

He told SFX magazine, "We are actively working on a new movie – which will be the 13th in the franchise – as well as a new video game." Horror Inc. CMO Sheri Conn also commented on the controversial redesign of Jason's hockey mask: "We reimagined the eyes on his mask to make Jason look even more menacing and paid homage to the franchise with the 13 holes in the mask. The new design (of the mask and the character) will be used across the board, with some slight differences in interpretation to fit the specific context of each project."

When asked about continuity between upcoming projects and the films we already have, Barsamian simply said, "We're exploring a variety of opportunities, but consistently staying focused on authenticity." (thanks to Joblo.com)

** THE INVISIBLE MAN sequel: At the start of the year, filmmaker Leigh Whannell revealed that Universal Pictures had no plans for a follow-up to 2020's THE INVISIBLE MAN adaptation which he directed. The film garnered rave reviews and performed strongly at the box office, transforming the classic story into a domestic abuse thriller with sci-fi overtones. Promoting his WOLF MAN take in January, he said any possibility of THE INVISIBLE MAN sequel is pretty much over, as the ending of the first is so definitive and artistically satisfying.

Now, while speaking to Screen Rant, the film's star Elizabeth Moss revealed that she still wants to make a sequel and is open to it being made one day, so long as the script comes together:

"It was out for two weeks before COVID and made hundreds of millions of dollars. We could have easily just churned out a sequel and thrown it up on streaming and called it a day, and I think some people would've made money off of that. I am so grateful to Universal and Blum for not doing that and for having a standard that's unusual in these circumstances and really wanting it to be worth doing. So it's an unusual thing, but that doesn't usually happen.

But I feel like it's important. We love that movie so much. The people who made it – we're so proud of it. We really want to make sure [that] if we do a sequel, it's worthy and it's going to have to be as good if not better. So that's been kind of what's slowed us down. But I don't think that's a bad thing. I think if we're going to do it, it's got to be right. But we still want to do it. We're still working on it. We just have to get the right script together."

The film was shot for just $7 million and ended up generating $144.5 million at the box-office, but its theatrical release in late February 2020 was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. (thanks to DarkHorizons.com)
